BORN JARROW, DURHAM 1885. SON OF DENNIS APPLEGATE (1848-1933) & CHARLOTTE SECKER (1852-1935), OF 34 PRINCES AVENUE, WITHERNSEA AND 21 ABBEY STREET, HULL. ONE OF EIGHT CHILDREN. HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND FOUR SISTERS.

HE MARRIED, ON 01/12/1910. WORKED AS A BOOT REPAIRER. HE WAS 5 FOOT, 4.5 INCHES TALL, 32-24 INCH CHEST, 100 LBS WEIGHT.

HIS WIFE, SARAH GERTRUDE LIVED AT 243 ANLABY ROAD, HULL& 26 ABBEY STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS). THEY HAD A YOUNG SON RONALD LESLIE APPLEGATE (BORN 17/02/1912) HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 12/12/1915. FORMERLY, PRIVATE IN THE  1/4TH EYR. ARRIVED FRANCE, 14/10/1916. TRANSFERRED TO 7TH EYR, 27/10/1916. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION 2 WEEKS LATER ON 10/11/1916, AGED 31.

HIS BROTHER IN LAW, HARRY HALL, WAS ALSO KILLED IN ACTION, ON 13/11/16. THEY ARE BOTH COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.
