BORN HULL 05/01/1893. ELDEST SON OF HERBERT ALTOFT (1865-1923)& EMILY MARY LAWRENCE (1863-1936), OF 81, ROSAMOND STREET, HULL. SON OF A MARINE ENGINEER. HE HAD ONE BROTHER, HAROLD AND ONE SISTER, MABEL ISABELL ALTOFT (1889-1974). HE WORKED HIMSELF AT EARLES SHIP BUILDING YARD.
ENLISTED AS PRIVATE, 32911, IN THE ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS, IN HULL, IN SEPTEMBER 1914. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 12/11/1914. COMMISSIONED INTO THE WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, ON 25/04/1917. RETURNED TO FRANCE, ON 24/06/1917. KILLED AT YPRES, ON 17/07/1917, AGED 24. HE WAS UNMARRIED.
BURIED AT ZILLBEKE CEMETERY, YPRES. HIS CWGC GARVE LISTS HIM AS G.A. ALTOFT. INSCRIPTION; "GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN LIVING IN OUR MEMORY STILL"
HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, HAROLD ALTOFT, 12TH EYR, HAD BEEN KILLED, AT SERRE ON 13/11/1916, AGED 19.
THEY ARE RECORDED TOGETHER IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 3, PAGE 5. & THE WW1 MEMORIAL, ST MATTHEWS CHURCH, BOULEVARD, HULL.
