Born Killingholme, Grimsby. Son of Annie Backhouse, of 353 South Boulevard, Hull (War Pension address).
Enlisted Hull. Served with the 1st East Yorkshire Regiment. Posted to France, on 5th Sept 1914. Killed in action, on 20/10/1914. On 20 Oct 1914, the 1st Battalion, The East Yorkshire Regt., engaged the enemy at Prémesques, just west of Lille, France. He has no known grave.
His army effects were left to his mother, his three brothers, Charles, David and John, and his three sisters, Harriet, Agnes and Lily May.
