Private, Herbert Adkins, 9th Black Watch (1889-1916)

Brother of Mr. T. Adkins, of 57, Beaver Road., Beverley, Yorkshire.

Herbert Adkins was born in 1889 at Rise and baptized on 19 Apr 1889 at All Saints Church, Rise. In 1901 he was living with his parents Thomas and Sarah Adkins at 94 Bogle Lane Beverley, one of 7 children.

Herbert enlisted in the 9th Battalion the Royal Highlanders, records show they were part of the battle of Deville Wood, which started on 15 July and ended on 9 September 1916. Hebert died of his wounds on 25 August 1916, aged 27.

He is buried at the Millencourt Cemetery, France and is remembered on the Hengate memorial, Beverley and in Beverley Minster.
