Armitage, Edward

Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE EDWARD ARMITAGE 17408. Born Whiehaven, Cumberland in 1885, Edward was one of four children, and the only son of James Armitage and Sarah Ann Tempest of 19 Wainwright Row, Hunslet, Leeds. A Miner by trade he married his wife Elizabeth Smith, on 10th November 1911 and the couple had a son, Edward Jnr, who was born on 30th December 1913. They lived next door to James Armitage which will at least have meant family was close to hand when Edward took the King’s Shilling and joined the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment on 2nd March 1915. He left Southampton for France on 17th August, so had a spell with other battalions until the Pals arrived in March 1916. He was killed in action at Serre on the Somme 13th November 1916 and his body was never recovered. He was 31 years old. Although not from Hull, Edward Armitage was a Hull Pal and has been included here so his name is remembered.
