HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 14/08/1900, AGED 18 AND 4 MONTHS. USED HIS MOTHERS MAIDEN NAME OF BALES AS HE DID NOT WANT HER TO KNOW THAT HE JOINED THE ARMY. HE WAS POSTED TO THE 2ND YORK AND LANCASTER REGIMENT. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM, AS 5 FOOT, 4 INCHES TALL, 128 LBS WEIGHT, 34 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES, BROWN HAIR, FRESH COMPLEXION. HE SERVED IN INDIA AND EGYPT. HE MARRIED RACHEL ALICE BREWIS, IN SOUTH SHIELDA, DURHAM, ON 20/09/1914, USING HIS REAL SURNAME, VINCENT. LIVED AT 3 BEAULAH GROVE, WOODHOUSE STREET, HEDON ROAD (ARMY ADDRESS). ARRIVED IN FRANCE WITH THE BRITISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE, ON 27/12/1914. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 21/04/1916.
