Barclay, Thomas James

The Hull Barclay Family who had 198 years of military experience. HDM 15/01/1915

BORN YORK 1892. SON OF THE LATE WILLIAM GEORGE BARCLAY (1837-1902) AND ELIZABETH SARAH BARCLAY (1848-1917), LIVING IN HULL AND YORK. HIS MOTHER IS BURIED IN HULL. HE SERVED AS A PRIVATE AND MUSICIAN AND THEN AS LANCE CORPORAL, 8183, IN THE 2ND WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, WHICH WAS HIS FATHER’S BATTALION.

HE CAME FROM A MILITARY FAMILY. SEVEN BROTHERS, THREE BROTHER IN LAWS AND FOUR NEPHEWS ALL SERVED. A TOTAL OF 198 YEARS MILITARY SERVICE. ONE BROTHER, STAFF SGT, 2440, WILLIAM HENRY BARCLAY, WAS THE FIRST SOLDIER IN THE 4TH EYR, TO BE AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL (DCM), HE BROUGHT IN A WOUNDED MAN UNDER FIRE AT ARMETIERES IN 1915. (HIS AWARD AND PHOTOGRAPH WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 2ND NOVEMBER 1915.) THOMAS WAS A REGULAR SOLDIER. ENLISTED IN LONDON AND JOINED THE 2ND WYR, HIS LATE FATHER’S OLD BATTALION. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 21/11/1914, AGED 23. HE IS BURIED AT CABARET-ROUGE BRITISH CEMETERY, SOUCHEZ, PAS DEL CALAIS, FRANCE. HIS DEATH AND PHOTOGRAPH WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 15TH JANUARY 1915. *

HIS BROTHER, BANDSMAN, SYDNEY HERBERT BARCLAY 2ND WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, WAS KILLED ON 19/12/ 1914, AGED 25.

HIS MOTHER DIED IN HULL IN 1917, AND SISTER CLARA IN 1918. HULL ADDRESS UNKNOWN.
