BORN HULL 08/03/1883. SON OF WILLIAM BARRON AND EMMA SMITH. HE MARRIED AT HULL, IN 1908. HIS WIFE EMMIE HARE & CHILDREN, LIVED AT SELBY COTTAGE, INGS ROAD, HULL (PROBATE ADDRESS). HE JOINED THE MERCHANT NAVY ON 20/06/19119. HE WAS LOST ON THE S/S GITANO, ON 23/12/1918, AGED 35.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON HULL’S WOODCOCK STREET ROLL OF HONOUR & SUTTON WAR MEMORIAL AND THE TRINITY HOUSE SCHOOL, GREAT WAR MEMORIAL, GEORGE STREET, HULL. HE LEFT £377 IN HIS WILL, TO CHARLES WILLIAM JOULES, POST MASTER ASSISTANT AND CHARLES HERBERT JOILES, MARINE FITTER.

The GITANO was posted missing in January 1919, lost with all 28 hands, presumed mined after passing Flamborough Head on 20/12/1918. The master was engaged chiefly in the general trades to the Baltic and had been running regularly and continuously throughout the Great war. The usual route to Gothenburg is due north-east from the Humber Roads, so she would normally be well out to sea when passing Flamborough Head..
Wreckage reported washed up at Tvedestrand, 30 miles NE of Chistians and, Norway.
