Bickers, Arthur

BORN HULL 1897. YOUNGEST SON OF FRANCIS BICKERS & MARY JANE HADDOCK, OF 30A SCULCOATES LANE, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). ONE OF NINE CHILDREN AND FIVE SONS SERVING. A FORMER CLERK FOR BLUNDELLS, SPENCE AND COMPANY AT BEVERLEY ROAD, WORKS, HULL. HE PLAYED FOR THE FIRM’S FOOTBALL TEAM. HE WAS UNMARRIED.

HE ENLISTED HULL, ON 16/11/1914. FORMERLY, GUNNER, 251, EAST RIDING RGA. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 6 INCHES TALL, 35 INCH CHEST AND GOOD PHYSIQUE. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 07/01/1916. GASSED JULY 1917. KILLED IN ACTION ON 20/09/1918, AGED 21. HIS BODY WAS NOT RECOVERED AND HE IS COMMEMORATED AT THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, SOMME, FRANCE. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 25/10/1918.

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE RETURNED TO HIS WIDOWED MOTHER, MARY JANE.

HIS BROTHERS FRANCIS, JOE, GEORGE & WALTER ALSO SERVED. HIS OLDER BROTHER FRANCIS, BICKERS, 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON 23/08/1918, AGED 30. ONE OF HIS OTHER BROTHERS WAS BADLY GASSED IN JULY 1917, ONE SERVED IN FRANCE AND THE OTHER WAS STATIONED IN GLASGOW.
