This memorial on Hull Eastern Cemetery commemorates the employees of the British Gas Light Company Ltd. Hull, who were killed or missing in the First World War.

BORN HULL 1878. SON OF A. JAMES & MARY ANN BISHOP, OF 39 NEW KINGS STREET, HULL AND 16, ANVILL TERRACE, SPRING STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). ONE OF FIVE CHILDREN. SON OF A POLICE CONSTABLE. HE MARRIED IN 1902. HIS WIFE KATHLEEN (KATE) ELIZABETH SPICER AND THEIR SON, WALTER JAMES BISHOP (1903-1979), LIVED AT 29, ABERDEEN STREET, HULL, (WAR PENSION & CWGC ADDRESS). A TRAM MOTOR MAN AND FORMER BLUNDELL’S WORKER. HE ALSO WORKED FOR THE HULL BRITISH GAS LIGHT COMPANY.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS A GUNNER, WITH THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. DIED OF ACUTE BRONCHITIS BROUGHT ON BY ACTIVE SERVICE, AT FOVANT, ON 16/11/1915, AGED 38. BURIED SALISBURY, WILTSHIRE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “THY WILL BE DONE”
HE WAS BROTHER TO ADA GRAY, ARTHUR, MARY, WILL & MABEL. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE BRITISH GAS LIGHT AND COKE COMPANY WAR MEMORIAL, KEPT AT THE FAKENHAM GAS WORKS MUSEUM, NORFOLK.

HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, PRIVATE, ARTHUR EDWARD BISHOP, 10272, 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, WAS KILLED ON 13/02/1916, AGED 31.
