BORN HULL 1884. SON OF THE LATE SAMUEL BORKWOOD (1853-1908) AND SARAH JANE WELLS (1853-1914). SON OF A DOCK LABOURER. ONE OF SIX CHILDREN.

HE MARRIED IN THANET, KENT, 1915. HIS WIFE ELEANOR MARY LEE (1889-1932) & BABY LIVED AT 33 FLINTON STREET, HULL. DROWNED AFTER HIS VESSEL WAS MINED IN THE NORTH SEA, ON 26/03/1916, AGED 32. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 26/03/1917.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE TOWER HILL, NAVAL MEMORIAL, LONDON. HIS WIFE LATER MARRIED GEORGE CALVERT.
Khartoum, built by Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Hull in 1899 and owned at the time of her loss by Hull Steam Fishing & Ice Co. Ltd., Hull, was a British fishing vessel of 303 tons.
On March 26th, 1916, Khartoum fishing was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-5 (Ulrich Mohrbutter), 6 miles northeast of the Longstone lightvessel. 9 persons were lost.
