Brocklehurst, James Francis

BORN VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA, 1896. AKA FRANCIS JAMES. SECOND SON OF JAMES CLARKE BROCKLEHURST (1860-1944) & MARGARET McCANN (1865-1944), OF 56 , PLANE STREET, HULL. HIS GRANDFATHER WAS WILLIAM McCANN. SON OF A SHIPPING CLERK. HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND TWO SISTERS.

BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED AS A CLERK, IN THE FRUIT TRADE. A KEEN SPORTSMAN HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE ST ALBANS CRICKET TEAM & THE HULL & DISTRICT HARRIERS CLUB. HE RAN IN THE EIGHT MILE HANDICAP RACE HELD ON THE 21/02/1914. HE WAS ONE OF SIX MEN OUT OF THE 19 RUNNERS IN THE RACE TO DIE IN THE GREAT WAR.

HE JOINED THE “HULL COMMERCIALS”, 10TH EYR,  AT THE OUTBREAK OF WAR AND WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE MACHINE GUN SECTION. HE WAS KILLED AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916, AGED 21. COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, FRANCE.

HE LEFT £107 IN HIS WILL TO HIS FATHER AT THIS PROBATE ADDRESS.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 22/12/1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

HIS OLDER BROTHER WILLIAM (1894-1983), SERVED IN THE EAST YORKSHIRE HEAVY BATTERY IN EAST AFRICA.

HIS NAME IS LISTED IN THE GOLDEN BOOK AT HULL MINSTER AND RECORDED ON THE ST MATTHEWS CHURCH WW1 MEMORIAL, BOULEVARD, HULL.
