BORN LEVEN, HULL, 1888. SON OF HODGON BRYAN (1853-1900) AND SELINA DALE (1853-1908). EMPLOYED AS A GLUE BOLIER, AT RICHARD HODGSON & SONS LIMITED. HE HAD SERVED FOR 4 YEARS, AS PRIVATE, 4280, IN THE 5TH EYR, TERRITORIALS. HE MARRIED LUCY DENNIS, AT ST NICHOLAS CHURCH, ON VALENTINES DAY, 14/02/1914 .THEIR DAUGHTER LUCY WAS BORN ON 04/08/1914, THE DAY WAR WAS DECLARED. HE ENLISTED AT BEVERLEY, ON 10/12/1915. MOBILISED ON 27/05/1916. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT 5 INCHES TALL, 120 LBS WEIGHT, 36 INCH CHEST, AND GOOD PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. HE ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 12/07/1916. POSTED TO THE 2ND YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, ON 03/08/1916. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 18/10/1916, AGED 29. HIS REMAINS WERE FOUND AND BURIED AT WARLENCOURT BRITISH CEMETERY, HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW WHO WAS EXPECTING THEIR SECOND CHILD. SHE MOVED TO 12 BEAVER ROAD, BEVERLEY AND THEN TO WAWNE. HE LEFT A BROTHER, JAMES WILLIAM BRYON, WHO SERVED IN THE 8TH GREEN HPOWARDS BATTALION, AND A MARRIED SISTER, MRS SELINA VERMALLS.
HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 313 DAYS AND 99 DAYS IN FRANCE. HIS FAMILY NAME WAS BRYAN, ALTHOUGH SHOWN AS ‘ BRYON’ BY THE CWGC AND HIS ARMY SERVICE RECORDS. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE BEVERLEY WW1 MEMORIAL, MEMORIAL GARDENS.
