SON OF JANES BURTON (1877-1923) & KATHERINE DOBSON HYDE (1876-1944) – 8, VERONA TERRACE, WATERLOO STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) & 30, WESTMINSTER AVENUE, HULL (WAR PENION & CWGC ADDRESS). ONE OF 14 CHILDREN, MANY OF WHICH DIED IN INFANCY. EMPLOYED AS A CLERK. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 6.5 INCHES TALL, 34-36 INCH CHEST, 116 LBS WEIGHT.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 08/01/1917. TRAINED AT BLYTH, CATTERICK & WHITLEY BAY. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 03/04/1918. SERVED WITH THE 2ND WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 28/05/1918, AGED 19

BURIED AT ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE READS, “PEACE PERFECT PEACE”.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 30/05/1918.

HIS BROTHER, CHIEF OFFICER, HERBERT STANLEY BURTON, RECEIVED THE KING’S COMMENDATION FOR BRAVE CONDUCT, MERCHANT NAVY. SERVED ON S/S “CITY OF RIPON” AND DROWNED DURING WW2, ON 11/11/1943, AGED 41.
