Butterworth, James Thirsk

Born Hull 1871. Son of Christopher Elliot Butterworth & Martha Matilda Thirsk. One of eight children. His mother died in 1911 and his father in 1916. Employed as a railway good’s porter and then a seed crusher at an oil mill. He married at Hull, on 15/12/1903. His wife Alice Paddison and their four children, Norman, Leonard, Lucy and Tom, lived at 15 Northumberland Villas, Fountain Road (1901 Census), 10 Gordon Avenue, Chapman Street (1911 Census) and at this address.

He enlisted at Aldershot, on 26/10/1915. Joined the Royal Army Service Corps. Served in Salonika, from 15/11/1915 to 06/11/1916. Discharged on 5/01/1917, with heart failure. Buried Hull Western Cemetery.
