BORN COTTINGHAM 1886. ONLY CHILD OF THOMAS CRAVEN BUTTERY (1850-1924) AND JULIA BARRETT (1855-1895), OF 8 CLARENCE AVENUE, WYNDHAM STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS). HIS MOTHER DIED WHEN HE WAS 9 YEARS OLD.

HE MARRIED FLORENCE “FANNY” STEPHENSON (1892-1981), AT HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, HULL, ON 05/08/1911, AGED 26. THEY HAD TWO DAUGHTERS, FLORENCE (BORN 08/03/1912) & VERA (BORN 18/11/1915). THEY LIVED AT 15, BRENTWOOD VILLAS, MARSHALL STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION & ARMY ADDRESS).

EX RECKITTS WORKER. WORKED AS A CARTER AND PACKER. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 5.5 INCHES TALL, 35-37 INCH CHEST, TATTOO ON LEFT FOREARM, PRIMITIVE METHODIST RELIGION.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 12/11/1915. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 08/11/1916. TRANSFERRED TO THE 7TH EYR, ON 20/11/1916. PROMOTED TO LANCE CORPORAL, ON 28/02/1917. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 12/05/1917, AGED 31. COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL, FRANCE, TO THE MISSING.

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, FANNY. SHE WAS AWARDED A WEEKLY WAR PENSION, OF 22 SHILLINGS AND 11 PENCE, ON 07/01/1918, FOR THE LOSS OF HER HUSBAND.
