Callis, Ernest

BORN HULL 1882. SON OF JOHN RICHARD CALLIS (1852-895) AND EMILY BURTON (1855-1933), OF 22 GREAT THORNTON STREET AND THIS ADDRESS. HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED IN ‘C’ COMPANY, 4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. ERNEST WAS DIGGING BEHIND SOME TRENCHES WHEN HE WAS HIT BY A STRAY BULLET AND KILLED INSTANTLY, ON 13/07/1916. HE WAS THE HUSBAND OF MRS MARTHA EMMA CALLIS, OF FRANCIS TERRACE, VAUXHALL GROVE, HULL. HE WAS 34 YEARS OLD. HIS DEATH WAS REGRETTED BY MANY FRIENDS & REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 19TH JULY 1916.
HE IS BURIED AT LA LAITERIE MILITARY CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “TOO DEARLY LOVED TO BE EVER FORGOTTEN FROM HIS LOVING WIFE AND DAUGHTER CHARLOTTE”
