Private Joseph Carter (1880-1916) of Beverley

Joseph Carter was born in Beverley in 1880. , Son of John Thomas and Annie Elizabeth Carter, of 43, Mill Lane, Beverley, Yorks.

He served in the 1st/5th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers. As part of the 50th Division, the 1/5th Bn. of the Northumberland Fusiliers took part in the battle of Fleurs-Courcelette, and it was on the first day of action in that battle, 15 September 1916, that Joseph Carter was killed in action.

He has no known grave, and is “Remembered with Honour” on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing. He was awarded the British War and Victory medals, and his name appears on the Beverley War Memorial
