Chapman, Stanley

Chapman’s, seated L to R, Ronald, standing John Robert Ellerker and Stanley, East Yorkshire Pals 12th Battalion died valiantly at the battle of Serre, on the 13th of November 1916. Listed on the Beverley War memorial and at rest Euston Cemetery Flanders Fields.

BORN HULL 06/01/1889. SON OF WILLIAM CHRISTOPHER CHAPMAN (1854- 1924) & PATIENCE HULLET LAMMIMAN (1850-1917). SON OF A LABOURER. HE HAD TEN SIBLINGS.

HE MARRIED MAUD ALICE NEWLOVE (1892-1954) IN 1909. THEY LIVED AT 4 HERBERTS TERRACE, SOUTGH PARADE, HULL (1911), 11 MAY TERRACE, WALKER STREET, HULL (1913 & 6 SPRING TERRACE, SPRING STREET, HULL. THEY HAD TWO SONS, STANLEY AND THOMAS. HE ENTERED THE SERVICE OF THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY (NER), AS A DREDGERMAN ON 10/07/1908, WORKING AT HULL DOCKS IN THE DOCK’S ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT.

HE ENLISTED IN THE 12TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT (HULL PALS). HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAIL MAIL ON THE 16/12/1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. * HIS DEATH AND PICTURE WERE ALSO PRINTED IN THE NER STAFF MAGAZINE, JANUARY 1917.

HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, 3618, BERTRAND CHAPMAN (1875-1918) SERVED IN THE AUSTRALIAN IMPERIEL FORCE, AND WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 06/08/1918, AGED 42.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. L/CPL STANLEY CHAPMAN 12/70. Born in Hull and employed by the North Eastern Railway as a Dredgerman, Stanley was married with two children and lived at 6 Spring Terrace, Spring Street, Hull. He enlisted at City Hall in September 1914 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 3rd Hull Pals. He was killed in action opposite Serre on the Somme on 13th November 1916 and buried in Euston Road Cemetery. He is also commemorated on the NER Roll of Honour.
