BORN HULL 1882. SCULCOATES. ONLY SON OF THE LATE WILLIAM CHARLES (1841-1895) & FANNY MARIA JACOBS, AT 229, MARLBOROUGH AVENUE, HULL. HIS FATHER WAS AN INDIAN MUTINY VETERAN, AND WORKED FOR HULL CORPORATION, IN THE CITY ENGINEERS DEPARTMENT.

BROTHER TO ALICE GRAVILLE AND EMMA ELIZABETH FRANKLAND. ALFRED MARRIED, ALICE HOOD, AT ST MATTHEWS CHURCH, HULL, ON 10/07/1909. HIS WIFE ALICE & 3 SONS, HORACE, ERIC AND CYRIL, LIVED AT 116, CLUMBER STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HE WAS EMPLOYED AS A POST OFFICE WORKER.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON09/12/1915, AGED 33 YEARS AND 10 MONTHS. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT, 11 INCHES TALL, 36 INCH CHEST. SERVED WITH THE ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY. QUALIFIED AS SIGNALER, 1ST CLASS, ON 22/11/1916. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 30/03/1917. APPOINTED CORPORAL, ON 09/08/1917. WAS KILLED AT YPRES ON 26/09/1917, AGED 35.

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS WIDOW, ALICE WHO WAS AWARDED A WEEKLY WAR PENSION, OF 27 SHILLINGS AND SIXPENCE FOR HERSELF AND THREE CHILDREN.

HE IS BURIED IN BEGIUM, AT VOORMEZEELE ENCLOSURES NO.1 AND NO.2. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION READS, “ONLY A STEP REMOVED”
