BORN GOVLESTON 11/11/1872. A ROYAL NAVAL RESERVE DECK HAND. HE MARRIED AT HULL IN 1912. HIS WIFE CLARA ANN (FULLER) CHILVERS, LIVED AT 378 HAWTHORNE AVENUE. (CWGC ADDRESS). LOST AT SEA, ON 21/02/1916, AGED 39. BURIED HEDON ROAD CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “LOVED BY ALL”.
HMT Carlton, built by Cochrane & Sons, Selby in 1907 and hired at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy minesweeper of 267 tons. On February 21st, 1916, HMT Carlton was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-6 (Matthias Graf von Schmettow), off Folkestone. 9 persons were lost.
