BORN HULL 1853. SON OF THOMAS AND MARY ANN DAVIS. HUSBAND OF FANNY SARAH DAVIS , AT 2 FANNY’S BUILDINGS, ADELAIDE STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). LOST BY ENEMY ACTION, ON 07/01/1918, AGED 65. HIS DEATH IS RECORDED IN THE HULL MERCHANT NAVY RECORDS.
The British steamship Arab SS was built in 1890 by Palmers’ SB. & Iron Co., Ltd., Newcastle as the ARAB SS for the Bedouin Steam Nav Co Ltd, Liverpool.
In 1904 renamed M.S.DOLLAR SS and in 1915 again renamed ARAB SS for W. R. Thomson. ARAB was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine UB-50 (Franz Becker) when 18 miles N. by E. of Cape Serrat on January 7th, 1918 and on route from Cardiff to Messina with a cargo of coal. Twenty-one men were killed. The captain was among the survivors.
