BORN HULL 1895. SON OF JOHN & ADA DEVINE, OF 88 HAVELOCK STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). ONE OF TEN CHILDREN. HE HAD SEVEN BROTHERS, AND ONE SISTER. WORKED FOR JOSEPH RANK, AS AN OFFAL PACKER IN A FLOUR MILL. A RESERVED OCCUPATION. HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 12/12/1915, AGED 20 YEARS AND 330 DAYS. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 7 INCHES TALL, 34 INCH CHEST, 131 LBS WEIGHT. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 09/07/1916. SERVED WITH THE 8TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 13/11/1916, AGED 21. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, JOHN.
HE IS BURIED AT SERRE ROAD CEMETERY No.1, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “IN GOD’S KEEPING”.
