Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE JAMES WILLIAM LANCELOT FENWICK 12/1468. Born 19th September 1896, James was the eldest of three children to Moses and Annie Fenwick of Bay House, Courtney Street, Hull. His brother and sister had both died as infants leaving James his parent’s only surviving child. Following his father into the trade, he worked as a Coal Dealer’s assistant prior to the war. When King and Country called, James signed up at City Hall joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. Fatally wounded in the trenches he was evacuated to the casualty clearing stations at Gezaincourt where he died on 27th May 1916. He was buried in the Communal Cemetery Extension there; he was 19 years old and someone’s only child.
