BORN HULL 1896. SON OF HENRY & FRANCES FUSSEY, OF 135 , ADELAIDE STREET, HULL AND 45 REGENT STREET. ATTD 92ND TRENCH MORTAR BTY. EMPLOYED AS A PORTER, BY THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS, KINGSTON STREET, HULL. ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS. SERVED IN EGYPT AND FRANCE WHERE HE WAS ATTACHED TO THE RENCH MORTAR SECTION. HE WAS AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL FOR BRAVELY SERVING HIS GUN UNDER FIRE, IN JULY 1918. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 28/07/1918, AGED 22.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. SGT, LEONARD FUSSEY 11/994. Born 4th February 1896, Leonard was the ninth of ten children to Henry ‘Burper’ and Frances Fussey of 135 Adelaide Street, Hull. A Railwayman for the NER before the war, he enlisted at Hull City Hall on 10th September 1914, joining the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment and was attached to the 92nd Light Trench Mortar Battery, quickly proving himself a capable soldier, he rose through the ranks to Sergeant. One of the Originals he played his part in all the set-piece battles from Egypt to the Somme, and Oppy Wood to the Spring Offensive. Leonard was killed in action on 28th July 1918 and was posthumously awarded the Military Medal for his bravery. He was there at the start and fell just over a hundred days from the end. Leonard is buried at Le Grand Hasard Military Cemetery; he was 22 years old.
