George Whitfield Gibbs

BORN HULL, 20/08/1882. SON OF JAMES CHARLES GIBBS & MARY ANN WHITFIELD ANDERSON, AT 105 SOMERSET STREET, HULL AND 11 DIVISION ROAD, HULL (Pension address). HE HAD ONE BROTHER, CHARLES AND FOUR SISTERS. A GENERAL LABOURER. HE WAS WELL KNOWN ON THE FISH DOCK & EMPLOYED BY MR FIELD, BILLINSGATE.

HIS WIFE MARY ELIZABETH FOYSTON (1883-1956), LIVED AT 5 ROSE TERRACE, CONSTABLE STREET, HULL. HE SERVED AS AN ENGINEMAN. HIS TRAWLER “COTSMUIR”, WAS ATTACKED BY U21, OFF EAST COAST & SANK QUICKLY. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 6TH MARCH 1916 AND 14TH MARCH 1917 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

On 02/02/1917 the HMT COTSMUIR (FY1537) disappeared on passage from River Tyne to River Humber. All 13 crew were lost. On was service, the ship never fished commercially. The following Hull men were lost in the crew of 13.
