BORN NEWLAND, HULL 1886. SON OF JOHN GILBERT, OF WATERWORKS COTTAGE, CLOUGH ROAD, HULL AND 2, STATION LANE, HEDON. HIS FATHER WAS A FOREMAN AT THE HULL GAS WORKS. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS.

MARRIED AT HULL, IN 1911. HUSBAND OF ANNIE ARKSEY, OF  7, ST GEORGES AVENUE, BOURNEMOUTH STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS).

A REGULAR 1ST EYR, SOLDIER, WITH 13 YEARS EXPERIENCE AND RESERVIST. IN CIVILIAN LIFE HE WORKED FOR THE BRITISH GAS LIGHT COMPANY, BANK SIDE, HULL.

HE ENLISTED WHEN WAR BEGAN AGED 31. HE  WENT TO FRANCE WITH THE BRTISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE, ON 08/09/1914. WOUNDED AT THE BATTLE OF AISNE, IN THE LEFT ARM, AND LEG BY SHRAPNEL, ON 26/09/1914. RETURNED TO SERVICE WITH THE 8TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE DIED ON 05/06/1917, AGED 33.

HE IS PICTURED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 12/10/1914. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 28/06/1917. *

HE LEFT A WIDOW AND TWO CHILDREN AT 7, ST GEORGES AVENUE, BOURNEMOUTH STREET, HULL.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMOROAL, FRANCE, TOTHE MISSING AND AT ST MARY’S CHURCH, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL.
