Gillyon, James Walter

BORN BEVERLEY 1869. SON OF GODFREY GILLYON (1834-1907) & ANN GRAY (1845-1903), 0F 56 BECKSIDE, BEVERLEY.  A DOCK LABOURER AND SEAM. HE COMPETED IN THE MARINER SPORTS SPCIETY RACES FOR YEARS AND APPEARED IN THE LOCAL NEWSPAPERS. HE MARRIED AT BEVERLEY, ON 08/11/1891. HIS WIFE, SARAH GRIFFIN (1870-1942), LIVED 23 RICHARD COOPER STREET, GOOLE. THEY HAD THREE CHILDREN. HE SERVED ON THE GOOLE SHIP “BURMA” AND WAS LOST AT SEA ON 23/5/1918, AGED 49. HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, JOHN GRAY GILLYON, 241367, 5TH YORKSHIRES, DIED A PRISONER OF WAR IN GERMANY, ON 14/11/1918, AGED 34. ANOTHER BROTHER, HERBERT GILLYON, A DOCK LABOURER LIVING AT 10 POPLAR TERRACE, CONVENT LANE, HULL, DIED IN MAY 1916, AGED 33.

SS Burma, built by S. P. Austin & Son, Sunderland in 1891 and owned at the time of her loss by Bennett Steamship Co. Ltd., Goole, was a British steamer of 706 tons. On June 23rd, 1916, Burma, on a voyage from London to Goole in ballast, was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-6 (Otto Ehrentraut), 15 miles east of Harwich. 7 persons were lost.
