Glew, Arthur

BORN HULL 1890. SON OF JOHN GLEW ( 1859-1923) & ELIZABETH ANN FIELDSEND (1860-1928), OF 18, FINSBURY STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A SLATE MASON. HE HAD SEVEN BROTHERS AND ONE SISTER. HE WORKED IN A SAWMILL AS A BOX MAKER.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 9057, 2ND EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. WAS KILLED IN ACTION AT YPRES ON 17/02/1915, AGED 25. COMMEMORATED ON THE MENIN GATE MEMORIAL.
HIS BROTHER, CHARLES FREDERICK GLEW WAS BORN IN HULL, ON 09/02/1899. HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 21/10/1914, AGED 16. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 2797, 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 5.5 INCHES TALL, 32 INCH CHEST, GOOD VISION, GOOD PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. SERVED IN FRANCE FROM 17/04/1915 TO 16/06/1915 AND AGAIN FROM 06/08/1915 TO 28/10/1915. HE HAD BEEN WOUNDED AT YPRES ON 03/05/1915, WITH A GUN SHOT WOUND TO THE HEAD AND REPATRIATED. DISCHARGED 24/12/1915, AFTER SERVING 1 YEAR AND 64 DAYS. HIS MILITARY CHARACTER WAS DESCRIBED AS “VERY GOOD”. HE DIED ON 14/02/1960, AGED 61
HIS OTHER BROTHER, DRIVER GEORGE FREDERICK GLEW, WAS A FLOUR MILL LABOURER. HE MARRIED ZOE SMITH, ON 17/09/1910. THEY LIVED WITH CHILDREN, ARTHUR, EVA AND ZOE AT 17 LINDEN CRESCENT, FLEET STREET, HULL (HIS ARMY RECORDS ADDRESS). HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 06/04/1915, AGED 29 YEARS AND 60 DAYS. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 6 INCHES TALL, 119 LBS WEIGHT, 34 INCH CHEST, TATTOOS ON RIGHT ARM AND RIGHT HAND. SERVED AS DRIVER, IN THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. DISCHARGED ON 20/03/1916, AFTER 349 DAYS SERVICE, WITH A WEAK HEART. HE DIED AT HULL IN 1934, AGED 48.
