BORN HULL SEPT 1894. SECOND SON OF ELI HENRY GOLDTHORPE (1861-1936) & MATILDA WETHERELL (1859-1959), OF 10 ALBANY STREET, HULL AND 77 , VICTORIA AVENUE, HULL,. ONE OF FIVE CHILDREN. SON OF A HM CUSTOM OFFICER. EDUCATED AT HYMERS AND WAS AN OUTSTANDING SCHOLAR AND ATHLETE. HE WON THE METCALFE EXHIBITION AT CAMBRIDGE FOR MATHMATICS AND ALSO THE HULL CITY UNIVERSITY EXHIBITION. HE WON FIRST TEAM COLURS IN CRICKET AND FOOTBALL AND OBTAINED HIS COLOURS IN FOOTBALL FOR CLARE COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE. AFTER A YEAR AT CAMBRIDGE, HE LEFT UNIVERSITY TO ENLIST WITH THE OUTBREAK OF WAR.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. BECAME TEMPORARY ACTING LIEUTENANT, WITH THE 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, AT ARRAS, ON 12/05/1917, AGED 22. HE HAD NOT BEEN HOME SINCE HE LEFT ENGLAND WITH HIS BATTALION, IN 1915.

UNMARRIED. HE LEFT SIBLINGS, HENRY, MARION AND NORMAN.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HDM 26/05/1917.
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON HYMERS COLLEGE MEMORIAL. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL.
HIS OLDER BROTHER, L/CPL HENRY GOLDTHORPE (1892-1971), SERVED WITH THE EAST KENT REGIMENT, AT THIS SAME ADDRESS.
