Gome, Derwent

BORN HULL 1897. SON OF CHARLED EDWARD GOME (1858-1918) AND SARAH ANN GOME (1861-1918), OF 10 ALMA PLACE, CAMPBELL STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND 1 BARNABAS TERRACE, WALCOTT STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A DOCK LABOURER. HE HAD ONE SISTER, ROSIE HILDA GOMES (1887-1921).

HE RESIDED IN HULL, BUT ENLISTED AT NEWARK, NOTTS. SERVED WITH THE 2/5TH SHERWOOD FORESTERS. DIED OF PNEUMONIA, AS A PRIONER OF WAR IN GERMANY, ON 23/07/1918, AGED 21. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, CHARLES, AT 1 BARNABAS TERRACE, WALCOTT STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).

BOTH HIS PARENTS ALSO DIED IN 1918. BURIED IN GERMANY. HIS GARVE INSCRIPTION READS, “GOD BE WITH HIM TILL WE MEET AGAIN”.

HE IS THE ONLY SOLDIER WITH THE SURNAME “GOME”, TO DIE IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
