Gosling, Ernest

PRIVATE ERNEST GOSLING 39675. Born in Hull, March 1883, Ernest was the second of three children to Henry and Mary Gosling of 11 Park View, Melwood Grove, Hull. A Labourer by trade, he worked for the British Gas light Company, Hull. He married Emily Windle in April 1915 and the couple moved into 1 Park View, just a few doors down from his family home. Ernest, like so many others, did not have much time to grow accustomed to married life. He enlisted in the Hull Pals, served in Egypt and France and posted in the trenches of the Western Front. He was killed in action in the small hours of 3rd September 1918, as his unit moved through the ruins of Nieppe under cover of darkness, to relieve the front line. Ernest Gosling is buried at Pont D’Achelles Military Cemetery; he was 35 years old, an old man in comparison to the soldiers around him some of whom were barely out of short trousers. His brother James served at the same address.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE BRITISH GAS LIGHT AND COKE COMPANY WAR MEMORIAL, KEPT AT THE FAKENHAM GAS WORKS MUSEUM, NORFOLK.
