Private, Richard Arthur Grantham (1887-1916)

Richard Arthur Grantham was born the 14 November 1877 in Hornsea, the third son of George and Sarah Grantham. On 1 May 1899, Richard married Elizabeth Jane Leighton of Kirton, Lincolnshire at St Mary’s Church, Beverley. They lived in Hornsea and had three children; Mabel, Doris and Fred. He worked as a Railway Signalman.

Richard entered military service in 1917, being called up to enlist in the 3rd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment on 15 May that year. Richard died of wounds taken in action on 28 November 1917, barely six months after he was enlisted. He is buried in Achiet-Le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension, France. For his service Richard was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He is remembered on the memorial in Hornsea War Memorial Gardens.
