BORN HULL 1887. SON OF THOMAS GREENDALE (1849-1926) & SARAH JANE GREENDALE (1853-1925), OF 5 DALTRY STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND 147A COLTMAN STREET, HULL. HE WAS EMPLOYED BY MESSRE F & T ROSS LTD. STORES, WEST DOCK AVENUE, HULL. SERVED WITH THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY TERRITORIALS, BEFORE JOINING THE REGULAR ARMY.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH 12TH PRINCE OF WALES ROYAL LANCERS. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 15/08/1914. DIED OF WOUNDS, AT ST OMER HOSPITAL, ON 16/05/1916, AGED 28. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WENT TO HIS FATHER, THOMAS. HE LEFT SISTERS, EMILY, CLARA AND ALICE, AND BROTHER, FREDERICK. HE IS BURIED AT LONGUENESSE (ST. OMER) SOUVENIR CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “WE HAVE LOST. HEAVEN HAS GAINED ONE OF THE BEST THE WORLD CONTAINED”
