Hackett, George Patrick

BORN HULL 1898. SECOND SON OF WALTER HACKETT & ALICE WILFORD, 47 JAMES STREET, HULL. HIS FATHER WAS FROM IRELAND AND WORKED AS A ‘JOBBING DRYER’. HIS MOTHER WAS FROM BRIDLINGTON. BOTH PARENTS DIED IN 1934. ONE OF NINE CHILDREN. GEORGE LIVED AT THIS ADDRESS (1901 CENSUS) & THEN AT 386 LIVERPOOL STREET, SEEDLEY, MANCHESTER. HE WAS SERVING AS FOURTH ENGINEER, ON THE NEWCASTLE SHIP, ‘EASTERN PRINCE’, SUNK ON 30/08/1917, AGED 18. HE IS COMMEMORATED WITH HIS BROTHER ON THE TOWER HILL NAVAL MEMORIAL, LONDON.
HIS BROTHER, THIRD ENGINEER, CHRISTOPHER JOSEPH HACKETT, WAS LOST AT SEA ON 30/04/1918, AGED 25 SERVING ON THE STEAM SHIP ‘UMBA’ SUNK BY SUBMARINE.

SS Eastern Prince, built by J. Priestman & Co., Sunderland in 1910 and owned at the time of her loss by Prince Line, Ltd. (Furness, Withy & Co.), Newcastle, was a British steamer of 2885 tons. On August 30th, 1917, Eastern Prince, on a voyage from Newport News to London with general cargo, was sunk by the German submarine U-62 (Ernst Hashagen), 30 miles S3/4W of Eddystone lighthouse. 5 persons were lost.
