BORN CRANSWICK, DRIFFIELD 1890. SON OF ROBERT HANCE (1860-1937) & CLARA TATAM (1860-1918), OF 83 RUSTENBURG STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN. EMPLOYED AS A GROCER. HE LIVED WITH HIS UNCLE, FRED NICHOLSON, OF 14 SWANN STREET HULL (1911 CENSUS). HE ENLISTED IN HULL AS GUNNER, 2530, ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. TRANSFERRED AS GUNNER, 761354, ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY, 42ND DIVISION, AMMUNITION COLUMN. HE DIED IN BELGIUM, ON 04/03/1919, AGED 28. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, ROBERT.
HE IS BURIED AT CHARLEROI COMMUNAL CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “EVER IN OUR THOUGHTS R.I.P.”
HIS BROTHER JOSHUA, SERVED WITH 5TH EAST YORKSHIRE CYCLIST. ANOTHER BROTHER, RICHARD, SERVED WITH THE ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS. HIS MOTHER, CLARA DIED IN 1918. HIS OTHER BROTHER, CHARLES HANCE, RAMC, DIED IN 1922, AGED 28.
