George Philmore Harrold and father (seated)

BORN CARDIFF, GLAMORGAN WALES, 03/07,1895. SON OF GEORGE HARROLD (1866-1937) AND ELIZA JANE HARRIS (1864-1953), of BRIGG ROAD, SCUNTHORPE AND 23 LOWER INGS ROAD. HE WAS EDUCATED AT CRAVEN STREET SCHOOL, HULL, GAINING THE HIGHEST MARKS EVER AWARDED. EMPLOYED AS A LABOURER AND

HE ENLISTEDAT  HULL IN SEPTEMBER, 1914. JOINING HIS FATHER’S FORMER PLATOON AND REGIMENT. THEY FOUGHT TOGETHER AT LOOS. HIS FATHER WAS WOUNDED ON 26/09/1915 AND SPENT FIVE MONTHS IN NEWCASTLE GENERAL HOSPITAL RECOVERING. HE WAS DISCHARGED FROM THE ARMY ON 03/06/1916.

GEORGE PHILMORE HARROLD, SERVED WITH “A” COMPANY, 10TH YORK & LANCASTER REGIMENT. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 03/07/1916. IT WAS HIS 2OTH BIRTHDAY. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 21/08/1916. *

HIS THIRTEEN YEAR OLD BROTHER RAN AWAY FROM HOME TO ENLIST WHEN HE HEARD OF HIS OLDER BROTHER’S DEATH.
