Heaven, Edwin Graham

Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE EDWIN GRAHAM HEAVEN 9767. Born in Bridlington in March 1984, Edwin was the youngest of two children, and the only son of Graham and Emma Heaven of 722 Anlaby Road, Hull. A Joiner by trade, he enlisted in the 10th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment and was sent to France. Edwin was killed in action on 12th April 1918 fighting yard by yard to hold the line against the onslaught of the German Spring Offensive. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, he was 24 years old. Edwin was part of a genuinely heroic struggle in which one hundred and nine enemy divisions launched themselves upon the British lines and yet ultimately made no real strategic gains at a cost of 250,000 casualties. Whilst the British themselves lost 160,000 men, they had fought the enemy to a standstill and decided the fate of the war
