BORN HULL 26/12/1895. SON OF JOHN INKERMAN HEDGES (1860-1931) & KATE WREN (1860-1936), OF 12 GOODRICK TERRACE, CAVE STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS).

SON OF A GARDNER. ONE OF ELEVEN CHILDREN. EDUCATED AT BEVERLEY ROAD COUNCIL SCHOOL. WORKED AS A PORTER AND ERRAND LAD.

HE ENLISTED AT HULL, ON 1/02/1915. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 08/10/1915. WOUNDED ON THE SOMME ON 1/07/1916. DIED IN THE MILITARY HOSPITAL, DEVONPORT ON 8/07/196, AGED 19.

HE WAS UNMARRIED AND HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE RETURNED TO HIS FATHER JOHN. BURIED AT SCULCOATES CEMETERY. RE-BURIED HULL NORTHERN CEMETERY. HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON ST MARY’S SCULCOATES CHURCH ROLL OF HONOUR. HE IS LISTED IN THE DE RUVIGNY’S ROLL OF HONOUR.

HIS BROTHERS FRANK AND MARK WERE ALSO KILLED. ONE OF THREE SONS LOST IN THE WAR. ANOTHER BROTHER, GEORGE CHRISTOPHER HEDGES, DIED IN HULL, IN JULY 1915, AGED 26. HE LEFT SISTERS, KATE, ALICE AND ESTHER AND A SURVIVING BROTHER, HERBERT, WHO ENLISTED ON 18/09/1917 AND SERVED AS A CLERK, IN THE WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT DEPOT, YORK.
TWO OTHER BROTHERS, JOHN WREN HEDGES, DIED IN 1906, AGED 11 AND ERIC FOSTER HEDGES DIED IN 1909, AGED 11, AND SISTER EDITH ISABELLA HEDGES DIED IN 1902, AGED 5.
