Heenan, Edward

BORN GOOLE 1875. ENLISTED HULL. SON OF MICHAEL AND MARY HEENAN – 10 JEWSON TERRACE, STUDLEY STREET. SINGLE MAN. THIS WAS HIS ARMY RECORDS ADDRESS.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE EDWARD HEENAN 12/1406. Born in Goole in 1875, Edward was the fourth of five children to Michael and Mary Heenan. A Labourer by trade, to say Edward ‘liked a drink’ would be something of an understatement. There are at least 19 records of him having spent time at first Her Majesty’s and then His Majesty’s pleasure in Wakefield Prison for the crime of being ‘Drunk etc’ which is a wonderful phrase painting a picture all its own. Edward was living at 63 Nornabell Street in Hull when he enlisted on 7th January 1915 and joined the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 3rd Hull Pals. His battle with the bottle continued unabated and he was sentenced to Field Punishment No.1 twice in the months preceding his death as the Somme campaign called and life must have felt pretty cheap. Edward was killed in action on 13th November 1916 and his body never recovered. His name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial; he was 41 years old.
