Frederick Herbert. HDM 02.08.1916

Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE FREDERICK WILLIAM HERBERT 11/902. Born in 1884, Frederick was the eldest son of Thurstan Herbert (1842-1914) and Elizabeth Sophia Bell (1852-1914), of 8 Goulton Street, Hull. He had six brothers and four sisters. A Casual Labourer by trade, Frederick lost both his parents in the months running up to the outbreak of war. He enlisted soon after, joining the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Tradesmen’, 2nd Hull Pals. After serving in Egypt over Christmas 1915, Frederick and the Pals arrived in France in early March 1916 and travelled north to the trenches of the Western Front. He was killed in action during the Somme campaign on 29th July 1916 and buried at Rue-Du-Bacquerot No.1 Military Cemetery at Laventie; he was 31 years old.

HIS NAME IS RECORDED AS KILLED ON HULL’S, WELLSTED STREET, ROLL OF HONOUR (Hull Daily Mail 25 September 1916).
