BORN MIDDLESBROUGH, 1894. SECOND SON OF BENJAMIN & KATE HIGH, OF 4 WEST VIEW, WYNGHAM STREET, HULL. (CWGC ADDRESS). ONE OF FIVE CHILDREN. DON OF A RAILWAY POLICEMAN. HE WAS A HAIRDRESSER AND NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS POLICEMAN, BASED AT HULL’S PARAGON STATION. HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS, ON 22/03/1915, AGED 21 YEARS AND 5 MONTHS. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 11 INCHES TALL, 138 LBS WEIGHT, 34.5 INCH CHEST. JOINED AS PRIVATE, 10/1215, 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT KNOWN AS THE “HULL COMMERCIALS”. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 15/04/1916. TRANSFERRED TO THE 8TH EAST YORKSHIRE BATTALION., ON 15/05/1916. WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 15/06/1915, AGED 22. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 1 YEAR AND 86 DAYS. HE IS BURIED AT ELZENWALLE BRASSERIE CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “HE DID HIS DUTY AND PASSED ON”
