BORN HULL OCT 1888.  SON OF MRS KATE ELLEN KAY & THE LATE LIETENANT COLONEL, RICHARD ETHELBERT JOHNSON (1856-1915) OF 49, ALBANY STREET, HULL. SON OF A SOLICITOR AND NOTARY. ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN. HE EMIGRATED TO CANADA IN 1914. ENLISTED IN THE CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE. SERVED AS A GUNNER, WITH 8TH CANADIAN ARTILLERY. DIED OF MULTIPLE WOUNDS AND BURNS, AT ETAPLES, ST JOHNS AMBULANCE HOSPITAL, ON 06/04/1918, AGED 30.
HE LEFT £29 IN HIS WILL AT THIS PROBATE ADDRESS. BURIED AT ETAPLES MILITARY CEMETERY, PLOT 33, ROW D, GRAVE 158/2. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “THERE IS NO GREATER LOVE THAN TO DIE FOR OTHERS”
HE LEFT BROTHERS, HAROLD ETHELBERT, THOMAS ETHELBERT, CHARLES STANLEY, AND WALTER PERCY JOHNSON, AND THREE SISTERS, ETHEL MARY, KATE AND DOROTHY. HIS BROTHER, CAPTAIN. WALTER PERCY JOHNSON, ROSE THROUGH THE RANKS. SERVED WITH THE 50TH NORTHUMBRIAN ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY, WAS WOUNDED TWICE AND WAS AWARDED THE MILITARY CROSS (HDM 25/06/1918 + PHOTO). LIEUTENANT, CHARLES STANLEY JOHNSON, 3RD EYR, WAS MISSING SINCE 27/05/1918.
