Ernest, Walter (twins), Sidney and Herbert Joules, of 14 Harcourt Street, Hull. HDM 14.03.1916

BORN HULL 10/10/1892. YOUNGEST SON OF CHARLES JOULES (1847-1919) & MARY ANN BUTLER (1851-1918). ONE OF THIRTEEN CHILDREN, SEVERAL OF WHICH DIED IN INFANCY. THE FAMILY ALSO LIVED AT 61 ABBEY STREET, HULL. BEFORE THE WAR HE WAS AN APPRENTICE JOINER AT MESSRS HARRISON & CO, HOLDERNESS ROAD. HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 18/09/1914. HE ENLISTED ORIGINALLY IN THE NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS AND HAD RECENTLY TRANSFERRED TO THE YORKS & LANCS REGIMENT. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM, AS 5 FOOT 6 INCHES TALL, 129 LBS WEIGHT, 35 INCH CHEST, FRESH COMPLEXION, BLUE EYES AND LIGHT BROWN HAIR. HE WAS POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 01/07/1916. WOUNDED IN THE BACK, ON 03/08/1916. RETURNED TO HIS UNIT AND WAS KILLED ON THE 9TH APRIL 1917. HE IS BURIED AT RAILWAY DUGOUTS BURIAL GROUND (TRANSPORT FARM), BELGIUM.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 24TH APRIL 1917 WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. * HE LEFT BROTHERS, CHARLES, HERBERT, HAROLD, ERNEST, WALTER & SISTERS FLORENCE, EDITH, LILY AND FANNY. HIS PARENTS BOTH DIED SOON AFTER THE WAR. HIS BROTHERS ERNEST JOULES, WAS KILLED ON 02/03/1916 AND HAROLD JOULES, DROWNED ON THE S/S CALYPSO, ON 10/07/1916. ANOTHER BROTHER WALTER JOULES, NEVER RECOVERED FROM HIS WAR EXPERIENCES AND DIED IN 1921, AGED 31. THEIR OTHER BROTHER, CAPTAIN, CHARLES WILLIAM JOULES SERVED AS A MASTER MARINER AND DIED IN 1940.
THEY LEFT SISTERS, FANNY, EDITH, FLORENCE AND LILLIAN.
