Born Beverley July 1888. Son of Thomas and Annie Lazenby, of North Ferriby, Yorks; husband of Gertrude Lazenby, of North Newbald, York. Private Fred Lazenby was the brother of Charles and William Lazenby who were also was killed in action in WW1. In 1911 Fred was a Farm Foreman and lived in Melton Brickyard with his family. Fred (Regimental number 242296) served with the 1st Sherwood Foresters, he was killed in action on the 26th March 1918 and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France, on panel 52 and 54.
During the First World War, the Sherwood Foresters had 33 battalions in service, of which
20 served overseas: mainly on the Western Front, but also in Gallipoli, Italy and the Middle
East. Over 140,000 men served in the regiment, which lost 11,400 killed. The regiment won
57 battle honours and 2,000 decorations, including nine Victoria Crosses. Officers and men
from the 12th Battalion produced the Wipers Times.
