PRIVATE WILLIAM ARTHUR LAZENBY MM 32914. Born Beverley. Son of Thomas William and Annie Eliza Lazenby, of 11, Church Rd., North Ferriby, Hull.
A Grocer before the war, he enlisted at Hull City Hall joining the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment in the trenches of the Western Front. William was fatally wounded during the Spring fighting in 1918 and withdrawn to the hospital centre at St. Omer where he died on 13th July 1918. He is buried in, Longuenesse Souvenir Cemetery, St Omer, France; he was 26 years old.
Private William Arthur Lazenby (Regimental number 32914) was the brother of Charles and Fred Lazenby who died of wounds in WW1. In 1901 William lived in Railway Terrace in Beverley. In 1911 William was a grocers assistant and lived in Melton Brickyard with his family. William served with the 11th Service Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. He died of wounds on the 13th July 1918 and is buried at the Longuenesse Souvenir Cemetery. He was awarded the Military Medal (MM) for his bravery.
Melton Brickyard was a small brick and tile works south of Melton Common in Melton Ings located on the bank of the Humber Estuary. The brick works continued to expand in the early 1900s and had acquired a tramway system with the clay pits. By the 1920s the tile works had closed.
