Lister, Samuel James

BORN MIDDLESBOROUGH, 1873. MARRIED FLORENCE ETHEL LISTER 1891 AND HAD FOUR DAUGHTERS. HIS SHIP ‘URBINO’ WAS RETURNING FROM NEW YORK WHEN IT WAS TORPEDOED AND SUNK ON 24TH SEPTEMBER 1915. SAM LISTER INJURED HIS ARM. ADMITTED TO HULL ROYAL INFIRMARY AND DIED OF PARALYSIS, ON 29/04/1916, AGED 43.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 3RD MAY 1916. THE DEATH OF SAMUEL LISTER LED TO AN IMPORTANT COURT CASE. HIS WIFE CLAIMED THAT HER HUSBAND HAD DIED OF SHOCK FROM HIS EXPERIENCES. HIS VOICE CHANGED, HE COULD NOT WALK UNAIDED AND HE WAS A CHANGED MAN. SHE CLAIMED COMPENSATION FROM THE WILSON LINE OWNERS. THE COURT HELD THAT BECAUSE THE CREW HAD LEFT THE STRICKEN SHIP THEY HAS CEASED EMPLOYMENT AND THE OWNERS WERE NOT LIABLE. (HULL DAILY MAIL REPORTED THE  JUDGEMENT, ON 05/08/1916)
