Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE JOHN FRANCIS MANN 22598. Born in Malton, North Yorkshire in 1892, John was the only child of Thomas and Annie Mann. A Labourer by trade he married Fanny Cheevers in the spring of 1915 and the couple settled down to married life at 11 Lily Grove, Carlton Street, Hull. Under the very real threat of conscription, John enlisted at Hull City Hall on 7th December 1915 and was sent to the Pals on the Western Front. He was killed in action during an audacious daylight attack on German positions around Tern Farm. They crept up on the enemy through the corn fields and took them by surprise with only light casualties. John must have been one of the battalion elders for the average age of the Pals following the heavy casualties of that Spring was just 19. The Australians who attacked alongside the 10th had nicknamed them the ‘Creche’. Manpower was so scarce it was little more than Boypower holding the British line together. John Francis Mann is buried at Le Grand Hasard Military Cemetery, Morbecque; he was 26 years old.
