BORN HULL 03/02/1893. SEVENTH SON OF JOHN & MARY JANE MAYS, OF 4 ADELAIDE STREET, HULL. EDUCATED AT HULL EDUCATIONAL COUNCIL SCHOOL.MARRIED AT ST MATTHEWS CHURCH, BOULEVARD, ON 6TH DECEMBER 1914. HIS WIFE VENETTA MAYS & CHILD LIVED AT 4 CARLTON TERRACE, SOUTH BOULEVARD, HULL.
BEFORE THE WAR HE WAS A SELF EMPLOYED GREEN GROCER AND COAL DEALER AND WELL KNOWN IN THE HESSLE ROAD AREA. ENLISTED IN THE LABOUR CORPS, ON 12TH MARCH 1917. WOUNDED BY A BOMB DROPPED BY AN ENEMY AIRCRAFT, AT VIERSTRAATE. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 20TH OCTOBER 1917, AGED 24. BURIED AT HOSPICE CEMETERY, LOCRE, SOUTH WEST OF YPRES. HE LEFT A WIDOW AND DAUGHTER, DORID, BORN ON 18TH OCTOBER 1915.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 6TH NOVEMBER 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HE IS ALSO LISTED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 4.

HE IS BURIED AT LOCRE HOSPICE CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE READS, “SAFE IN GOD’S KEEPING JUST OUT OF SIGHT”.
