BORN RAVENSTHORPE 19/07/1876. SON OF JAMES A. & EVANGELINE MELLOR, OF MIRFIELD, YORKSHIRE. HIS WIFE LILLIAN LIVED AT 6 , GLASGOW STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). SERVED AS FIRST ENGINEER, ON THE HULL STEAM SHIP “EARL”. PRESUMED DROWNED ON 21/01/1916, AGED 40. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE TOWER HILL, NAVAL MEMORIAL, LONDON AND ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH MEMORIAL, NEWINGTON, HULL.

CREW LOST ON THE SS “EARL” (H436), missing, result of enemy action, 21st January, 1916. The Hull trawler EARL (1916), owned by the Great Northern Steam Fishing Company, was on Saturday given up for lost. The vessel which carried a crew of nine, left Hull on 21st January for a voyage to the North Sea fishing grounds.
